NFF’s Extraordinary General Assembly Gives Onigbinde, Nwosu Post-Humus Honour

A major talking point that emerged from Monday’s extraordinary general assembly of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was post-humus honour given late Chief Adegboye Onigbinde and Henry Nwosu.

Sports247 reports that the meeting in Yenagoa was the first full-scale gathering of Nigerian football administrators and stakeholders since the death of Onigbinde, who had two terms as head coach of the national team.

Apart from being a highly regarded football coach, the well-acclaimed ‘Modakeke high chief’ had also been a renowned instructor for the continent’s governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the global authority, FIFA.

In similar vein, Nwosu shot to limelight as the youngest player in the first Nigerian squad to win the Africa Cup of Nations, when the then Green Eagles won the title on home soil in 1980, and he went on to become a top-rated coach.

Apart from making his mark with a couple of clubs in the lower echelon of Nigeria’s domestic league, Nwosu also had a shot stint in charge of the under-17 national team, Golden Eaglets, all of which deepened lamentations over his death.

The names of both Nigerian football legends resonated on Monday inside DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall of Bayelsa State Government House, as Nigerian football egg heads welcomed stakeholders from all across the country.

Also in the hall were political leaders, administrators and visitors from foreign countries and leading corporate personalities, who all stood for a moment of silence before deliberations began, in honour of Onigbinde and Nwosu.

This was confirmed in the opening paragraph of a communique that was released after Monday’s meeting, which read in part: “The Congress observed a one-minute silence in honour of former NFF Technical Director,

“Two-time Coach of the Super Eagles, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde and former Nigeria captain Henry Nwosu (MON), as well as other stakeholders in Nigeria football who passed on in the past few months.”
