Uncertainty continues to surround the international eligibility of Arthur Okonkwo for the Nigeria national football team, with administrative processes still ongoing despite the goalkeeper’s decision to represent Nigeria.
The 24-year-old Wrexham A.F.C. shot-stopper has already committed his international future to Nigeria following discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

However, he is yet to be cleared to feature in competitive matches because the final approval required to complete his nationality switch has not been fully processed.
Administrative Delay from the English FA
According to updates from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the federation is still waiting for an official ratification letter from the The Football Association (FA) in England.
This letter is the final administrative requirement needed to confirm Okonkwo’s change of international allegiance from England to Nigeria under FIFA regulations.
Until that documentation is received and processed, Okonkwo remains ineligible to represent Nigeria in competitive fixtures.
Earlier reports in late 2025 and early 2026 suggested that FIFA had already granted clearance for the switch.
However, the NFF clarified on March 1, 2026, that the administrative process was still ongoing and had not yet been fully concluded.
Possible Involvement in Friendly Tournament
Despite the paperwork delay, coach Chelle is reportedly keen to integrate the goalkeeper into the squad setup.
Okonkwo could therefore participate in team activities during the upcoming four-nation invitational tournament scheduled to take place in Amman, Jordan starting March 24, 2026.
Such involvement would allow the goalkeeper to familiarize himself with the team environment while awaiting formal clearance for competitive appearances.
Strong Form at Wrexham
Okonkwo’s push for a Super Eagles place has been strengthened by his impressive performances in the 2025–26 EFL Championship season with Wrexham.
The Nigerian-eligible goalkeeper has featured prominently for the club, helping them remain in playoff contention.

Appearances: 34
Clean Sheets: 10
Minutes Played: 2,970
Current League Position: 6th
His form has placed him firmly in the conversation to challenge current Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali for the national team’s No.1 shirt once the eligibility process is completed.
Awaiting Final Clearance
For now, the situation remains a matter of paperwork rather than sporting preference.
With Okonkwo already declaring his commitment to Nigeria, the Super Eagles must simply wait for the final documentation from the English FA to formally complete the switch.
Once that step is finalized, the talented goalkeeper will become fully eligible to represent Nigeria in competitive international matches.
