Super Eagles’ Friendly With Jordan Faces Fresh Confusion, Despite Reports Naming Turkey As New Host

Jolts of confusion are rolling round the much-talked about international friendly between the Super Eagles and Jordan, as contrasting information emerged at the weekend about the four-nation competition they are billed to feature in.

Sports247 notes that, while an earlier report indicated that the competition had to be cancelled because of Iran’s withdrawal and security fears in the Middle East, latest info indicates it might have been relocated to Turkey.

However, two loose points appeared in the report indicating this update on Sunday – being that Iran are still listed for the competition and the media statement was attributed to Jordan’s football association.

The biggest snag in this line of information is that Iran do not look likely to raise any team to play international football during the war-torn circumstances they are currently going through and the source of the statement is unusual.

Observers would wonder what role Jordan’s football officials were playing in the scheme of things for the four-nation competition in the first place that they are now readily making an administrative statement about taking it to a nearby country.

However, a media statement purportedly from Jordan’s FA pointed out on Sunday that the mini-tournament will still feature their national team along with Nigeria, Iran and Costa Rica, but the venue would now be in Turkey.

The statement noted in part, “The Jordanian Football Association has decided to move the matches of the four-team international friendly tournament, scheduled for March 2026, to be held in the Turkish city of Antalya, due to the current situation in the region and the limited movement of people.”

This is in contrast with an earlier report that emerged on March 11th, indicating that the planned four-nation tournament in Jordan had been cancelled following Iran’s withdrawal due to regional conflict.

Sports247 recalls that Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was already exploring alternative options for a single friendly against Jordan, possibly at a neutral venue in Europe during the March international window.

The suggestion at that point was that the Eagles would play Jordan alone at a venue in Europe, but no definite statement was made regarding the host country, and Turkey have not officially confirmed they will stage the game.

It’s now left to be seen if the latest report about Turkey hosting the mini-competition is true, maybe the Eagles will play a single match versus Jordan or if the schedule has been cancelled altogether.
