The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has directed that a one-minute silence be observed before kick-off in all Matchday 30 fixtures this weekend in honour of late Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu.
The directive was issued by NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye following the death of the former Nigeria national football team midfielder at the age of 62.
In a statement released on Saturday, the league body said the tribute is aimed at recognising Nwosu’s immense contribution to Nigerian football both as a player and later as a coach within the domestic league.
Nwosu, who was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations, died in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja after a brief illness.
Elegbeleye described the late midfielder as a respected figure in Nigerian football whose legacy extended beyond his playing days.
He noted that Nwosu was not only a key player for several Nigerian league clubs but also contributed to the development of the domestic game as a coach after retiring from active football.
Meanwhile, attention on the pitch shifts to one of the standout fixtures of Matchday 30 as Kwara United host in-form Enugu Rangers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Rangers arrive in strong form, having won four of their last six matches, including an emphatic victory over defending champions Remo Stars.

The Flying Antelopes currently sit on 52 points and are pushing hard in the title race behind league leaders Rivers United.
Kwara United, however, head into the encounter with renewed confidence after securing consecutive victories.
The Harmony Boys are aiming for a third straight win as they seek to improve their position on the league table.
With Rangers chasing the title and Kwara United eager to build momentum, Sunday’s clash in Lagos is expected to deliver an intense contest while the Nigerian football community pays tribute to one of its enduring icons.
