The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has directed that a one-minute silence be observed before kick-off in all Matchday 30 fixtures this weekend in honour of late Nigerian football legend Henry Nwosu.
The directive was issued by NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye following the death of the former Nigeria national football team midfielder at the age of 62.
In a statement released on Saturday, the league body said the tribute is aimed at recognising Nwosu’s immense contribution to Nigerian football both as a player and later as a coach within the domestic league.
Nwosu, who was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 African Cup of Nations, died in the early hours of Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja after a brief illness.
Elegbeleye described the late midfielder as a respected figure in Nigerian football whose legacy extended beyond his playing days.
He noted that Nwosu was not only a key player for several Nigerian league clubs but also contributed to the development of the domestic game as a coach after retiring from active football.
