The Nigerian sprinter showed explosive speed out of the blocks and maintained his momentum through the line to claim victory ahead of a strong field.
Kalen Walker of the United States finished second with a personal best of 6.50 seconds, while Malachi Snow followed in third place with a time of 6.54 seconds.
Okon’s impressive run not only secured his heat victory but also further cemented his growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s rising sprint talents on the collegiate stage.
With the performance, Okon has now moved into joint second place on Nigeria’s all-time list in the 60 metres, equaling the long-standing mark set by Deji Aliu. Aliu’s time had stood as the national record since 1999 before it was recently surpassed just two weeks ago.
The result represents a major milestone in Okon’s young career and highlights his rapid development within the highly competitive NCAA sprint circuit. Running a time as quick as 6.48 seconds places him firmly among the fastest Nigerian indoor sprinters in history.
With momentum on his side and confidence growing, the Nigerian speedster will now be looking to build on this breakthrough performance as the championship progresses.
His latest achievement also adds to the growing list of Nigerian athletes making significant impacts on the international collegiate athletics scene.
