Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has explained why many Nigerian footballers often succeed on the global stage, pointing to ambition and the willingness to leave their comfort zones as key factors.
The African football icon said Nigerian players typically show a strong desire to test themselves in different environments, especially by moving abroad to compete at the highest level.

According to Okocha, this mindset sets them apart and helps them grow both professionally and personally.
“Ambition and the willingness to step out of your comfort zone are very important,” Okocha said.
The former Super Eagles star explained that Nigerian players often take bold steps early in their careers, leaving familiar surroundings in search of tougher competition and better opportunities.
He contrasted this mentality with that of some other players who may prefer to remain in familiar environments rather than take on new challenges.
Okocha also reflected on his own career journey, noting how adapting to different cultures and football styles was an important part of his development as a player.
The Nigerian legend spent several years playing in Europe, including a successful spell in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, where he quickly became a fan favorite.
“When you move to countries like Germany, you have to adapt to the culture and even the language,” he explained.
According to him, players who embrace those challenges often grow faster and become more complete professionals.
Okocha stressed that hunger and determination remain the biggest ingredients for success in football.
“You must have the desire to improve and keep pushing yourself,” he added.
The former midfielder believes that Nigerian players have consistently shown that ambition throughout the years, which explains why so many of them continue to make an impact in top leagues around the world.
Okocha concluded by encouraging young footballers to remain fearless in pursuing their dreams and opportunities beyond their comfort zones.
