Former Nigerian international Abiodun Obafemi has stressed that invitations to the national team must be based strictly on current form, amid discussions about the possible return of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to the Nigeria national football team.

Obafemi acknowledged that Nwabali has been a key figure in Nigeria’s recent goalkeeping setup and has contributed to bringing stability to the position.
However, he warned that inactivity at club level could affect a player’s performance and readiness for international competition.
“Goalkeepers must earn their place in the national team based on current form,” Obafemi said.
The former defender explained that regular playing time is essential for any goalkeeper to maintain sharpness and confidence, especially at the international level where mistakes can be costly.
“When a player is not active at club level, it can affect his performance,” he added.
Obafemi also pointed out that several other Nigerian goalkeepers have stepped up when given the opportunity, both in Europe and within the domestic league.
According to him, this competition should be encouraged rather than creating a situation where a position is reserved for a particular player.
“Other goalkeepers have done well when called upon,” he noted.
He emphasized that maintaining competition within the squad is important for the overall strength and balance of the national team.
“Places in the team should remain competitive and not guaranteed,” Obafemi explained.
While acknowledging Nwabali’s contributions, Obafemi concluded that every player must continue to prove themselves through consistent performances.
“Everyone should fight for their place in the team,” he said.
