‘Many Ex-Footballers Are Forgotten!’ Ekpo Laments Lack of Welfare for Retired Players

Former Nigerian international Friday Ekpo has raised concerns about the welfare of retired footballers in the country, stating that many former players feel abandoned after their careers come to an end.

Ekpo lamented that unlike professionals in institutions such as the military and police who receive pensions and post-service support, many retired footballers in Nigeria are left to fend for themselves after years of representing the nation.

“Many retired footballers feel neglected once their playing careers are over,” Ekpo said.

According to the former midfielder, the lack of a structured welfare system has left several ex-internationals struggling financially despite their contributions to Nigerian football and the Nigeria national football team.

“There is no proper system to take care of players after retirement,” he added.

Ekpo explained that during their playing days, footballers dedicate their lives to representing the country and bringing pride to the nation, but often receive little support once they hang up their boots.

“Players serve the country with pride, but after retirement many of them are left to cope on their own,” he said.

The former international also questioned the management of funds allocated for the national team under the Nigeria Football Federation, suggesting that players sometimes receive less than what is officially approved.

“Sometimes what players receive is far less than what is allocated for them,” Ekpo noted.

He stressed that the situation places additional financial pressure on former players who already lack stable post-football opportunities.

Ekpo called on football authorities to introduce structured welfare programs, pensions or support systems that will help former players transition into life after football.

“There must be a system that supports players when their careers end,” he concluded.
