Sports247 reports that Sanusi added his voice in mourning the death of globally renowned Nigerian football buff who was fondly called ‘Modakeke High Chief’ and was twice appointed head coach of the men’s national team.

“Chief Onigbinde ate, drank, breathed, slept and lived football development. We will miss him greatly, as he was never tired of giving advice on the game’s development even at his ripe old age.

“We pray that God will grant him eternal rest, and also grant his family, relations, friends and the Nigeria football fraternity the fortitude to bear the big loss,” Sanusi commiserated.

A statement from the NFF’s information department also noted in part that the iconic and legendary Onigbinde, who started his coaching career in the 1960s, rose to national consciousness in 1977.

That was when he led Water Corporation FC of Ibadan to the quarter-finals of the African Champion Clubs Cup competition following which he guided another team from the same city, IICC Shooting Stars, to the final seven years later.

Onigbinde also served as technical director of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) as well as technical adviser of Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation, in charge of the Caribbean country’s youth teams.

He was also for many years a technical advisor of Confederation of African Football (CAF), during which time he worked with several technical study groups of both FIFA and CAF at major championships.
