Former coach of the Nigeria women’s national under-17 football team, Bala Nkiyu, has expressed confidence that Morocco will still host the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations despite recent uncertainty surrounding the tournament’s scheduling.
The Confederation of African Football recently confirmed that the competition would be rescheduled to 25 July – 16 August 2026, after it was initially planned for March–April. The governing body cited “unforeseen circumstances” following consultations with FIFA and other stakeholders.

However, CAF’s statement did not clearly reaffirm Morocco as the host nation, leading to speculation about the venue of the tournament.
Nkiyu believes the situation will be resolved in due course and expects Morocco to retain the hosting rights.
“I still believe Morocco will host the WAFCON despite the uncertainty,” Nkiyu said.
The former coach explained that discussions between CAF and Moroccan authorities are likely ongoing and could soon bring clarity to the issue.
“There may be some issues between CAF and the Moroccan authorities, but I expect them to be sorted out before the tournament begins,” he added.
According to Nkiyu, Morocco has already invested heavily in football infrastructure and successfully hosted major international competitions in recent years.
“Morocco has the facilities and experience to organise a tournament of this magnitude,” he noted.
The former Flamingos coach also stressed that stability in hosting arrangements is important for participating nations as they continue preparations for the competition.
“Teams need clarity so they can plan properly for the tournament,” he explained.
Nkiyu concluded by expressing optimism that once the logistical issues are resolved, preparations for the continental championship will proceed smoothly.
“I believe everything will be settled soon and the tournament will go ahead successfully,” he stated.
