Emmanuel Amuneke: “The NNL Is Very Tough” After Heartland FC Defeat Smart City FC

Heartland head coach Emmanuel Amuneke has described the Nigeria National League (NNL) as highly competitive following his side’s 3–1 victory over Smart City FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium on Saturday.

The former Super Eagles international praised his players for securing maximum points in what he considered a challenging encounter against a well-organized opponent.

“The main target is always to get the three points, and if we can score more goals it becomes an added advantage,” Amuneke said after the match.

Heartland entered the game aware of the threat posed by the Lagos-based side, having previously faced them earlier in the season.

“We knew they are a good side. We played them once in Lagos and we understood their quality,” he explained.

Amuneke noted that his team approached the match with a clear tactical plan, focusing on discipline and concentration rather than trying to dominate possession throughout the game.

“Our idea was very clear and different. We knew they would have their moments of possession during the game, and it all depended on how we stayed focused and organized,” he added.

Despite the convincing scoreline, the coach admitted disappointment over the goal his side conceded, stressing that defensive concentration remains an area the team must continue to improve.

“Unfortunately we conceded one goal, but these things happen in football. What is important is how the team responds,” he said.

The victory provides a positive platform for Heartland as they prepare for their next league fixture against Sunshine Stars FC.

Looking ahead to the clash, Amuneke emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and continuing to collect points as the campaign progresses.

“Hopefully next week against Sunshine at home we can continue to get maximum points and see how the journey unfolds,” he concluded.

Heartland will now aim to build on their latest success as they navigate what Amuneke described as a demanding and unpredictable NNL season.
