Reigning Nigerian national champion in the 110m hurdles, Nnamdi Onwaeze, made a positive start to his outdoor campaign with a victory in Heat 3 of the men’s 100m at the Beach Opener.
The Nigerian athlete crossed the finish line in 10.67 seconds to secure the heat win, delivering a strong early-season performance as he begins preparations for the outdoor track and field calendar. The race, however, was assisted by a +4.3 m/s tailwind, which is above the allowable limit for official record purposes.
Despite the wind-assisted conditions, the performance served as an encouraging start for the hurdler, who is primarily known for his exploits in the 110m hurdles. Competing in the 100m sprint often forms part of early-season preparation for hurdlers, helping them sharpen acceleration, speed endurance, and race rhythm before transitioning fully into hurdle events.
Onwaeze’s controlled run demonstrated good early acceleration and finishing strength, allowing him to comfortably claim top spot in his heat. The outing also provided valuable competitive exposure as athletes begin building form for the months ahead.
As the reigning national champion in the 110m hurdles, expectations remain high for Onwaeze heading into the outdoor season. His early appearance in the 100m signals the start of what could be another busy campaign as he looks to maintain his dominance domestically while aiming for strong performances in international competitions.
With the outdoor season now underway, the Beach Opener provided a solid platform for the Nigerian hurdler to regain race sharpness and momentum. Onwaeze will now look to build on this promising start as he gradually shifts focus back to his specialist event in the 110m hurdles.
