Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi has delivered one of the most electrifying performances in African indoor track history, storming to victory in the men’s 60m final at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships with a blistering 6.45 seconds.
The World Championships finalist produced a near-flawless race from the blocks to the finish line, erasing the 24-year-old Nigerian indoor record of 6.48s set by Deji Aliu in 1999.

In the process, Ajayi matched the long-standing African indoor record previously held by Leonard Myles-Mills and equaled the NCAA all-time record — a feat that places him firmly among the fastest indoor sprinters in collegiate and continental history.
Explosive out of the blocks and technically sharp through his drive phase, Ajayi maintained exceptional top-end speed to separate himself from the field in a stacked final. The 6.45s mark not only confirms his upward trajectory but also signals Nigeria’s renewed strength in short sprint events on the global stage.
This landmark performance instantly becomes one of the greatest indoor sprint runs ever recorded by a Nigerian athlete. Beyond the time itself, it underscores Ajayi’s consistency at the highest level, having already established himself as a major championship contender.
With the outdoor season approaching, attention will now turn to even bigger targets. The Nigerian and African outdoor records may well be within reach if this trajectory continues.
For now, however, the statement has been made. The sprint season is officially underway — and Ajayi is flying.
