Vice President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Babatunde Ogunade, has acknowledged that differing interpretations within the federation’s board have led to uncertainty regarding the end of its current tenure.
Ogunade explained that some members of the board believe the tenure expired in January, while others insist that the mandate runs until October, creating a disagreement that has now been referred to the international governing body for clarification.

“There are different interpretations within the board about when the tenure actually ends,” Ogunade said.
According to him, the matter has already been formally communicated to FIBA, which is expected to provide guidance on the issue.
“Petitions have been sent to FIBA, and we are awaiting their clarification,” he noted.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the board’s tenure, Ogunade emphasized that the federation remains focused on its responsibilities and ongoing basketball programmes across the country.
“Our immediate focus is still on basketball activities and the development of the game,” he explained.
He stressed that administrative disagreements should not distract from the federation’s commitment to supporting national teams and grassroots basketball initiatives.
“The sport must continue to grow regardless of internal discussions,” he added.
Ogunade also reassured stakeholders that the federation will respect whatever decision emerges from the international governing body.
“Once FIBA gives its verdict, we will align ourselves accordingly,” he said.
The vice president concluded by urging patience from the basketball community while the issue is being resolved.
“It is important to allow the proper authorities to clarify the situation,” he stated.
As the federation awaits a final ruling from FIBA, the NBBF leadership says it remains committed to maintaining stability and progress in Nigerian basketball.
