Head coach Finidi George has reiterated Rivers United’s determination to push on for the league title despite Sunday’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Bayelsa United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Speaking after the encounter, Finidi praised his players’ effort but admitted the result fell short of expectations, especially given the congested fixture schedule ahead.
“It was not a bad performance, but it wasn’t good enough,” Finidi said. “We came here not to lose. With what’s behind us and the outstanding matches we have, the run-in is going to be hectic. At least getting a point would have been a good result.”
The former Super Eagles winger noted that Rivers United created chances in both halves but failed to capitalize, a shortcoming that ultimately proved costly.
“My boys gave a good fight in the first half and created chances. In the second half as well, we had opportunities but couldn’t take them.
When that happens, it becomes difficult. We have to accept it and move forward to the next game,” he added.
Addressing Rivers United’s recent struggles against Bayelsa United, Finidi dismissed suggestions of a psychological barrier, insisting the club’s long-term objective remains unchanged.
“If losing to Bayelsa will give us the league, I will accept it now,” he said.
“Let’s lose against Bayelsa and win the league. I’m not too worried about losing to them last season and this season. The end purpose of our campaign is to win the league.”
Finidi maintained that his side were the better team on the day but conceded that dominance without goals counts for little.
“We were the better side, but sometimes being the better side doesn’t win you games. You have to score goals. It’s quite unfortunate,” he concluded.
Rivers United will now turn their attention to recovery and preparations ahead of their next fixture as the NPFL title race intensifies.
