The draw, conducted on Thursday, also produced a blockbuster showdown between European champions Real Madrid and Manchester City, renewing one of the competition’s fiercest modern rivalries.
The two heavyweights have delivered some of the Champions League’s most dramatic encounters in recent seasons.
Elsewhere, Chelsea will take on Paris Saint-Germain, while Newcastle United face Barcelona in a repeat of their league-phase meeting.
Tottenham Hotspur have been paired with Atletico Madrid in another mouth-watering tie.
Meanwhile, Arsenal appear to have a favourable path. The Gunners will meet Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 and, if successful, could play either Sporting CP or Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-finals.
Mikel Arteta’s side have avoided several tournament favourites — including Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea and Liverpool — all positioned on the opposite side of the bracket.
A potential semi-final could come against Newcastle United, Barcelona, or the winner of Atletico Madrid versus Tottenham Hotspur, further fuelling belief among Arsenal supporters.
The Round of 16 ties will be played over two legs, with first legs scheduled for 10/11 March and return fixtures on 17/18 March, as the knockout phase of this season’s Champions League gathers momentum.
