Junior Adamu’s Assist Can’t Save Celtic From Exit In Europa League

Celtic of Scotland’s Nigerian-born striker, Chukwubuike Junior Adamu got an assist in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, but the lad on loan from SC Freiburg of Germany could not save his team from crashing out.

Sports247 reports that, while Celtic’s injury-prone Super Eagles’ star, Kelechi Iheanacho played as a 78th minute substitute in the encounter away to VfB Stuttgart of Germany, Adamu’s assist gave the visitors the game’s only goal.

However, it was not good enough to keep The Bhoys in continental action, as they had lost the first leg 4-1 at Parkhead and Stuttgart sealed their place in Friday’s last-16 draw after a 4-2 aggregate victory.

It was Stuttgart’s first-ever home defeat against a team from the Scottish Premier League, but their three-goal advantage from the first leg in Glasgow made all the difference for Die Roten on their home soil.

Their surge came despite Sebastian Hoeneß’s side being hit with a shock after just 30 seconds, when Adamu’s clever pass was clinically swept into the bottom corner by Luke McCowan to give Celtic a dream start.

Sadly, no further goal came, as Celtic realized that the damage had been done in the first leg and, despite their first away victory at the 17th attempt in Germany, Adamu’s side could not progress to the UEL’s last 16.

Adamu, who was born in Kano on June 6th, 2001, started his career with the youth team of GSV Wacker of Austria in January 2014 and the following year he joined Red Bull Salzburg, where he progressed through the levels from U15 to U18.

He also represents Austria at international level and got his first senior appearance on November 12th, 2021 in a World Cup qualifier versus Israel, after games for his adopted country’s U18, U19 and U21 teams.
