The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has been conferred with the prestigious Thomas Sankara Pan-African Prize for Excellence, in recognition of his integrity-driven leadership, commitment to grassroots development, and outstanding contributions to youth empowerment and nation-building.
The award was formally presented during a courtesy visit by a high-level delegation of the Youth Partnership for Africa’s Development (YOUPAD) to the SSA’s office in Abuja.

The YOUPAD delegation was led by Dr. Okewu Abel (Nigeria) and included Mr. Austin Kouassi (Côte d’Ivoire), Mr. Daniel Donald (Ghana), and Mr. Ikechukwu Kwasi (Ghana)—a truly Pan-African representation underscoring the continental significance of the honour.

In its citation, YOUPAD described Hon. Adeboye as “a principled public servant, a champion of grassroots transformation, and a Pan-African leader whose work continues to inspire confidence, unity, and opportunity among young Africans.”
Joining a Distinguished Pan-African Lineage

With this honour, Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye joins an exclusive league of past recipients of the Thomas Sankara Pan-African Prize—an elite group comprising former African heads of state, senior government officials, defence chiefs, academics, and development leaders whose service has shaped governance, security, youth development, and public administration across the continent.
Named after the late Burkinabè revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, the Prize stands as one of Africa’s most respected recognitions for integrity, transparency, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to Pan-African ideals.

Recognition of Grassroots-Centred Leadership
Responding to the honour, Hon. Adeboye expressed appreciation to YOUPAD for the recognition, describing it as a reflection of the collective national effort to reposition grassroots sports and youth development as critical pillars of unity, discipline, and socio-economic progress.
“This recognition reinforces our belief that sustainable development begins at the grassroots. Sports remain a powerful tool for shaping character, discovering talent, and creating pathways for young people to contribute meaningfully to national growth,” the SSA stated.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment—under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR—to strengthening grassroots institutions and empowering Nigerian youth through inclusive and transparent policies.
Continental Collaboration and Youth Development
YOUPAD, a Pan-African youth organisation with historical roots tracing back to the West African Students’ Union of 1925, noted that Hon. Adeboye’s leadership aligns strongly with its mission of nurturing ethical, competent, and visionary African leaders.
The delegation disclosed that following the Abuja engagement, they would proceed to Kigali, Rwanda, to advance their flagship continental initiative, “Africa for Africa,” focused on youth entrepreneurship, intra-African trade, value addition, and sustainable development.
The conferment of the Thomas Sankara Pan-African Prize on Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye is widely viewed as both personal recognition and a symbolic affirmation of Nigeria’s renewed leadership role in promoting integrity, youth empowerment, and grassroots-driven development across Africa.
Observers note that the honour sends a clear message across the continent: leadership anchored on integrity, service, and people-focused impact continues to earn Africa-wide respect and legitimacy.
