Suliat Aribidesi’s Penalty Gives Clegg School Top Spot On Day 2 At Goals For Girls Summit

Sports247 reports that a spot kick apiece became essential to get the top placed team, after Clegg and Itolo Girls Junior Secondary School both finished level on six points after four matches for all five participating teams in the round-robin football competition.

Dramatically, Itolo earlier lost a penalty apiece in their second and third games, after scoring one to win the opening match of the mini-competition which came after class work and football drills.

Itolo’s sports mistress, Mrs Aduragbemi Oyebamiji said it was a huge disappointment, while captain of the side, Beatrice Emmanuel admitted that she and her colleagues failed to take advantage of two golden chances of winning the cup straight off during their earlier games.

On the other hand, Clegg Girls went dancing in celebration all the way, as Aribidesi, a native of Kwara State, who plays for the junior team of CATS Ladies FC of Surulere, thanked God for helping her make a difference for the squad that was captained by Patience Mbalaga.

The school’s sports mistress, Mrs Mariam Kasumu heaped praises on Aribidesi for making a world of difference when it mattered most for the squad whose institution is located at nearby Mobolaji Johnson Crescent, off Adeniran Ogunsanya Road, Surulere.

Third place went to Akintan Grammar School, who defeated Lagos Progressive High School 1-0 in their last match, while Sari-Iganmu High School placed joint-fourth with a 0-0 draw versus Itolo Girls in one of the day’s last set of 10 games (two holding simultaneously across ten minutes each).

Trophies and medals were later handed out to the top three teams of the mini-football competition in the two-day summit that featured another set of 150 students on Day 2, just as had also been on offer when the activities started on Tuesday at The Stable Sports Complex, Bode Thomas Road, Surulere.

A cross-section of the students said they were excited with all activities they engaged in during the summit, which spread out across three different segments on both days – leadership education, football skills and mini-competition.

They also gave thumbs up to USA-based Goals For Girls Project and its executive director, Damilola Ogunbote, whose parents were among the special guests that graced the second day of activities at the leadership summit.
