Ajilore Urges NFF to End Speculation With Contract Extension for Chelle

Former Nigeria international Femi Ajilore has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to move decisively and offer Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle a contract extension, insisting that doing so is the only way to end the growing speculation surrounding the coach’s future.

Speaking in a chat with Brila FM, Ajilore said public statements of support from the football authorities are no longer enough, stressing that clarity and stability can only be achieved through a formal renewal of Chelle’s deal.

“Public backing is good, but it is not enough,” Ajilore said. “The only thing that will truly put an end to all these speculations is a contract extension. Anything short of that will keep people guessing.”

The former Super Eagles midfielder noted that Chelle has completed his first year with the national team and shown signs of progress, particularly in terms of team structure, player discipline and tactical identity. According to Ajilore, such improvements deserve continuity rather than uncertainty.

“You can see that the team is gradually taking shape,” he added. “The players understand what the coach wants, and that only comes with time. If you disrupt that process now, you risk going backwards.”

Ajilore also warned that constant media speculation about a coach’s future can negatively affect players and the overall environment around the team.

He explained that uncertainty at the top often filters down into the dressing room, creating distractions that could be avoided with a clear decision from the federation.

“Players want to know who they are working with and what the future looks like,” he said. “When the coach’s position is unclear, it can affect focus and confidence.”

The former midfielder urged the NFF to take a long-term view, arguing that successful national teams are built on stability and trust between administrators and technical crews. He cited examples of countries that have benefited from sticking with a coach through a defined cycle.

“If the NFF truly believes in Chelle, then they should show it with action, not just words,” Ajilore concluded. “A new contract will give him the confidence and authority to fully implement his plans and take Nigerian football forward.”
