Former Super Falcons star Stella Mbachu has questioned the decision to recall midfielder Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene to the national team, expressing reservations about the value the move brings as Nigeria prepares for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Mbachu said she was surprised by Okobi’s inclusion after a long absence from the Super Falcons setup, noting that the team should be focused on building continuity and momentum with players who have been part of recent programmes.
According to the former international, while experience is important, the timing of recalls must be carefully considered, especially with a major tournament around the corner. She stressed that consistency in selection helps players understand roles and responsibilities, which is crucial for success at the highest level.
“I don’t really see the added value in bringing Okobi back after such a long time away,” Mbachu said. “At this stage, the team should be building chemistry and continuity with players who have been involved consistently.”
Mbachu, however, was careful not to completely dismiss the decision, acknowledging that the coaching crew may have specific tactical or leadership reasons for the recall. She noted that head coaches often have insights that are not immediately visible to the public.
“The coach may have his reasons, and we will hear them in due time,” she added. “But generally, selection should be about form, consistency and how players fit into the team’s current plans.”
The former winger also pointed out that Nigeria has a growing pool of midfield talent, including younger players who need opportunities at the international level to gain experience and confidence. She warned that repeatedly turning to familiar names could slow the development of emerging talents.
Mbachu urged the technical crew to strike a balance between experience and renewal, especially as African women’s football continues to evolve rapidly. She stressed that Nigeria must stay ahead by refreshing the squad while maintaining its winning mentality.
“WAFCON will not be easy,” she concluded. “Every country is improving, and Nigeria must make the right decisions now if they want to stay on top.”
