Yusuf Alli: Athlete Migration is Global Trend, Better Welfare Will Keep Nigeria’s Best

The Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board and former AFN director, Yusuf Alli, has described the movement of Nigerian athletes abroad as part of a natural global trend driven by the search for better opportunities.

Alli explained that athletes often leave when they believe their lives and careers will improve elsewhere, but insisted Nigeria has enough talent to retain its best performers if they are properly supported.

“Athletes will always move if they feel life will be better elsewhere. That is a global reality,” Alli said. “But Nigeria has enough quality to keep its best talents if they are properly cared for.”

He stressed that improved welfare packages, job security and better treatment would significantly reduce the urge for athletes to switch allegiance.

“When athletes feel valued, supported and secure, they are more likely to stay and proudly represent the country,” he added.

Alli noted that creating a system where athletes are supported during and after their competitive careers remains key to protecting Nigeria’s sporting future.
