Victor Ezeji Calls for Urgent Reforms to Improve Nigerian Clubs’ Continental Performances

Former Nigerian international Victor Ezeji has urged stakeholders to pay closer attention to the declining performances of Nigerian clubs in continental competitions, warning that the trend will continue unless structural issues are addressed.

Ezeji said Nigeria’s struggles in CAF tournaments are no longer isolated incidents involving one or two teams, but a reflection of deeper problems within the domestic football system.

“This is not a Rivers United problem or any single club’s problem. It is a Nigerian football issue,” Ezeji said.

“We have talents, but talent alone is not enough to compete on the continent.”

The former Enyimba striker expressed concern that Nigerian clubs, despite having four continental slots every season, often fail to progress beyond the preliminary rounds.

He also criticised the habit of clubs overhauling entire squads before a new season, expecting instant results without allowing players time to build understanding and cohesion.

“Some clubs change almost the whole team and expect miracles. Football doesn’t work that way,” he added.

Ezeji warned that unless proper planning, continuity and professionalism are prioritised, Nigerian clubs will continue to make up the numbers in Africa rather than compete seriously for honours.
