Philip Shaibu Declares: Sports Has Gone Beyond Mere Entertainment

The Director-General of National Institute for Sports (NIS), Honourable Philip Shaibu has come out with an emphatic declaration that engagement in sporting activities is no longer just for the sake of entertainment.

Sports247 reports that Shaibu made the cogent clarification while speaking as the special guest at a sports development seminar and training session that took place in Sagamu, Ogun State.

The former deputy governor of Edo State went on to emphasise the need for young people to put in their best efforts in order to ensure they make strong strides in life with their talent that was given them by God.

While expressing hope for a positive impact from the seminar, Shaibu also praised organisers of the event, which had over 100 students, teachers and coaches in attendance at Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu.

The programme, whuch was tagged ‘Training and Coaching Clinic in Soccer for Grassroots Sports Development in Ogun State,’ was supported by Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi), who represents Ogun West Senatorial District.

Shaibu added in his opening speech that sports is one of the strongest platforms to help young people build careers, create wealth and contribute to development of the nation, which is blessed with many talents.

The NIS top shot further stressed that sports is an effective platform for youth empowerment, which will thrive best with visionary leadership by administrators who propel the government’s efforts.

“Engaging our youths through sports is one of the most effective ways to put them on the right path to greatness. Sports today is far beyond entertainment. It is a global business.

“The collaboration between visionary leadership and structured training will help us produce champions. It may look like a drop of water, but it will surely become a full bucket,” Shaibu pointed out.

He also commended Senator Adeola for his support and commitment to youth sports initiatives, which he said are similar with the NIS’ programmes and part of Nigeria’s nationwide sports revival.

Sports247 gathered further that the initiative has been extended beyond Ogun West Senatorial District, due to Senator Adeola’s belief in fairness, inclusion and balanced development
