Edwin Edogbo Receives Comforting Words, Following Racist Attack On Social Media

Ireland’s Nigerian-born rugby star, Edwin Edogbo has received comforting words from the national team’s coach, following a racist attack the youngster faced after his debut with the country of his birth.

Sports247 reports that Edogbo was one of Ireland’s outstanding players in a stunning victory over Italy, during their second match of the Six Nations Tournament.

However, while Edogbo celebrated the feat, a section of Ireland’s fans took to social media with a rain of racist comments trailing a post that congratulated the young debutant, though he played as a substitute.

The Munster RC forward, who featured for only the final 10 minutes of Saturday’s 20-13 victory over Italy, first gained support from Irish Rugby Football Union, as they quickly turned off the original social media post.

A statement by the IRFU disclosed, “We’re aware of some targeted abuse online in recent days and continue to work with relevant authorities to report the cowardly actions of a minority and investigations are under way.”

On his part, Ireland’s coach, Andy Farrell praised the debutant’s contribution to his side’s victory over Italy and gave top marks to the 23-year-old second row, who has 30 points in 24 games for Munster.

Farrell retorted, “We need to celebrate Edwin’s first cap, that is for sure as it is one amazing story. I am so pleased we were able to get a win for him, because his story is a phenomenal one. So, we will celebrate that with him.”
