England’s Nigerian-born rugby national team captain, Maro Itoje has spoken out in defence of immigrant sports stars who continue getting top marks for Great Britain on the international scene.
Sports247 reports that Itoje’s declaration comes in response to allegations recently raised by Manchester United FC’s co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe that Britain ‘has been colonized by immigrant sports stars.’

The Lions’ captain made his point few hours after failing to save his die from losing 31-20 to Scotland in the Six Nations, as Steve Borthwick’s side imploded to their first loss in the 2026 Calcutta Cup.
Before slumping in defeat, Itoje, who has a Nigerian father and British mother, faulted Ratcliffe’s comments about immigration as an obstacle in Britain, and described the football mogul’s views as ridiculous.
The veteran rugby star, who missed the start of England’s pre-Six Nations camp to attend his mother’s funeral in Nigeria, did not hold back when asked before the clash with Scotland at Murrayfield about Ratcliffe’s verdict.
“Obviously I don’t condone the language he used. I was born in this country of Nigerian descent and I think it’s ridiculous to say Great Britain has been colonised by immigrants.
“That is so far from the truth. I think it’s wrong. (But,) if I’ve read correctly, he has apologised for his comments,” said the 31-year-old Itoje.
