Sports247 reports that, ahead of the Games scheduled for July 23rd to August 2nd in Glasgow, Scotland, the NSC has released over N200m to 26 top ranked Nigerian athletes through its Elite and Podium Board.
Olopade disclosed that the training grants were disbursed to a wide range of Nigeria’s elite competitors in athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, powerlifting and para-sports.
He further revealed that the grants were released to specially selected athletes at both home and abroad, with a view towards helping them concentrate on personal preparations and meet their pre-competition needs.
The NSC’s DG also explained that all athletes who got the latest round of grants were selected after a thorough process of checks, in order to ensure that top-quality performers and medal-winning potentials benefitted from the gesture.
Olopade then thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for trusting the NSC’s current leadership, under the chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko, and for his belief in the power of sports to further boost Nigeria’s image internationally.
“Mr President believes strongly in the power of sports and the potential of the Nigerian athlete. That belief is already translating into increased funding and improved international results,” Olopade stated.
He concluded by pointing out that giving grants to elite athletes is part of efforts by the NSC to boost all needs in welfare, preparation and output among Nigeria’s globally rated representatives.
“This is our way of reassuring our athletes that their welfare remains our utmost priority. When we take care of our athletes, they will take care of the country by winning medals,” Olopade enthused.
Sports247 recalls that this is the second time in six months that the NSC has released training grants to Nigeria’s elite athletes, with high hope for better performances from them at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
