Olympique Marseille of France January loan signing, Ethan Nwaneri has come under fire from critics, following his poor performance last weekend against Paris Saint-Germain in the French Ligue 1.
Sports247 gathered that, in contrast with Nwaneri’s Marseille debut, when he netted a wonder goal, the lad on loan from Arsenal of England had a torrid game last Sunday and his team lost 5-0.
In the course of the disastrous outing, 18-year-old Nwaneri had to be substituted at half-time, following his below-par first half performance, though he started on Marseille’s the right flank.
While Nwaneri was pulled off at the restart, the coach who signed him, Roberto De Zerbi resigned, following which several French media outlets published critical analyses of the player’s display, with one suggesting he ‘had a dire performance.’
One of the publications, La Provence expressed dismay with Nwaneri’s fourth outing for Marseille, stressing that he failed to replicate his debut form, as the lad crumbled under the weight of Sunday’s massive test.
The local outlet added, “Since his debut, which culminated in a goal against Lens, the Englishman has been unable to replicate that performance. This match seemed far too big for his 18 years.
“Replaced by (Igor) Paixao at the start of the second half, he tried to motivate his team-mates. But this was in a way that was too haphazard and disorganised.
“What is the point of blaming players who know nothing, or almost nothing, of what OM represents and who we can already bet will either have left or be on the transfer market next summer.”
RMC Sport also noted during their live coverage: “Nwaneri isn’t technically precise enough and Marseille are chasing the ball. The Englishman struggled a lot in the first half.
“(Mason) Greenwood will now be able to return to his preferred position. It’s a terrible humiliation for OM. Marseille were completely outclassed.”
