Former Super Falcons star Maureen Madu has expressed strong confidence in Nigeria’s chances of retaining their continental crown when the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) kicks off.
Speaking on the Super Falcons’ prospects, Madu acknowledged that Nigeria’s status as Africa’s most successful women’s team means they will remain the target for other nations, but insisted the Falcons have the quality, experience and mentality to rise above the challenge.
“Other countries will definitely work harder to beat Nigeria because we are the team to beat,” Madu said. “But the Super Falcons are a strong and highly motivated side, and champions always find a way to win.”
The former midfielder noted that women’s football across Africa has continued to improve, with several countries investing heavily in development and competitiveness.
However, she believes Nigeria’s pedigree, depth and winning culture give them an edge heading into the tournament.
“African teams are getting better and stronger, but when it matters most, the champions usually prevail,” she added.
Madu also emphasized the importance of preparation, unity and focus, urging the team to remain grounded despite their past success.
The Super Falcons head into the 2026 WAFCON as defending champions, aiming to extend their dominance on the continent and further cement their legacy as Africa’s most decorated women’s national team.
