Warri Wolves of Delta State coach, Napoleon Aloma has revealed a number of factors that spurred his players towards victory against Remo Stars on Thursday in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Speaking to Sports247 in the wake of the victory that took his side up to ninth position on the NPFL table, the highly acclaimed coach with over 44 years of experience in the development of young players said Wolves’ 1-0 win was gained through sheer determination.
He disclosed further that his players were also spurred by memories of their last match, plus the fact that their fans were eager to see a revival of fortunes, and they felt the referee gave Remo Stars victory when both sides met in the first round.
Aloma declared, “We played against the champions. A team that had been on the continent for the past three, four seasons. So, we gave them the respect that they deserved.
“Even then, we were still confident that we would definitely beat them. We actually outplayed them in the first leg. It was just with the aid of the referee that they got a lone goal; and that was why we came all out this time around.
“The game was 65-45 in our favour, and I thank God that we got the all-important three points. I was confident we would beat them, though we were unable to take our chances in the first half.”
He concluded by pointing at another motivational factor that came from their loss away to Rangers International the previous week and how the players realised that they had to appease the club’s management and fans with their next home game.
“Remo Stars didn’t create any chance, and we knew they would want to play ‘big man’ type of football. But we used our tough experience from the NNL, and we were not scared.
“We knew we would get the necessary goal, especially because of the disastrous outing we had in Enugu before this game.
“We needed to pay our fans back and show appreciation to our management who believe in this team. They have confidence in these players, and we just have to show how grateful we are,” Aloma concluded.
Sports247 reports further that the articulate coach, who is fondly called ‘Worldwide,’ is now looking forward to another positive outing in their next match, which will be away to Kwara United of Ilorin.
