Adeboye described the loss as painful, shocking, and heartbreaking, coming at a time when the Super Eagles captain had just concluded national duty with pride and distinction at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria secured the bronze medal.
Reacting to the sad development, the SSA said the entire Nigerian sports family shares in Ndidi’s grief and stands firmly with him during this difficult moment.
“This is a very painful loss. Wilfred Ndidi has given his all for Nigeria on the biggest continental stage, leading with courage, discipline, and commitment.
To receive such devastating news at this moment is truly heartbreaking,” Adeboye said.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Ndidi family, noting that the nation owes the Super Eagles captain not just applause for his performances on the pitch, but solidarity and compassion off it.
“On behalf of the Presidency and the Nigerian grassroots sports community, I pray that God grants the repose of the soul of Mr. Sunday Ndidi and gives Wilfred Ndidi, his siblings, and the entire family the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he added.
Mr. Sunday Ndidi reportedly lost his life after being hit by a vehicle in Umunede, near Agbor, Delta State, a tragedy that has cast a pall over the Nigerian football community.
The SSA further urged Nigerians, especially the youth and sports stakeholders, to remember that athletes are human beings beyond the jersey, deserving empathy, care, and support in moments of grief.
“This is a time for us as a nation to rally around one of our own. Wilfred Ndidi has served Nigeria with honour, and Nigeria must now stand with him in love, prayers, and unity,” Adeboye stated.
The Nigerian sports family continues to mourn the loss while praying for comfort, peace, and healing for the Ndidi family.
