Sports247 reports that, although the League Two outfit officially stated that Aneke is leaving ‘by mutual’ consent, observers noted that it was most likely due to the striker’s inability to meet expectations.
Now advanced in age, the Nigerian-born attacker failed to make hay in four months at Shrewsbury and his time at The Croud Meadow appeared numbered towards the end of last year.
Aneke, who also played for Charlton Athletic, Birmingham City, MK Dons and Alexandria Crewe among his previous clubs, scored just once for The Shrews during his time with the League Two side.
The 32-year-old attacker made 15 appearances, but failed to start any game he featured in, and Shrewsbury disclosed that Aneke decided ‘to step away from his playing role with the club by mutual consent.’
