Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman return to club duty on Wednesday night for pivotal UEFA Champions League fixtures, fresh from Nigeria’s bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Osimhen’s Galatasaray will host Atletico Madrid at Rams Park in a high-stakes Matchday Seven encounter, while Lookman’s Atalanta welcome Athletic Bilbao to the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on the same evening.
Both players were among Nigeria’s standout performers at the AFCON in Morocco.
Osimhen recorded four goals and two assists in six appearances, while Lookman contributed three goals and three assists, emerging as an early favourite for the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
Galatasaray currently sit 18th in the Champions League standings with nine points from six matches and face a stern test against an Atletico Madrid side they have never beaten in four previous European meetings.
The Turkish champions lost twice at home in those encounters, including a 2–0 defeat in 2015.
Osimhen, who has scored 12 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions this season, will be central to Galatasaray’s hopes of securing an automatic place in the knockout phase.
The 27-year-old captained Nigeria during the AFCON semi-final against Morocco but was substituted late in extra time after picking up an ankle knock.
Galatasaray conclude their league-phase campaign away to Manchester City on January 28, with the threat of slipping out of the playoff places looming should they suffer consecutive defeats.
Meanwhile, Lookman returns to an Atalanta side placed fifth on the Champions League table with 13 points, just one ahead of ninth-placed Liverpool.
La Dea will be keen to end a seven-match winless run against Spanish opposition in European competitions, having last beaten a Spanish side in the 2019/20 season against Valencia.
Athletic Bilbao arrive in Italy struggling for form, conceding three or more goals in each of their last three matches. Those results include a 5–0 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and a 3–2 loss away at Real Mallorca.
As the Champions League reaches a decisive stage, both Osimhen and Lookman will be eager to translate their impressive AFCON displays into match-winning performances for their clubs in Wednesday’s crucial European clashes.
