Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has missed out on the CAF Women’s Coach of the Year award, despite leading Nigeria to a historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced TP Mazembe coach Lamia Boumehdi as the winner, with Madugu and Morocco’s Jorge Vilda making up the final shortlist.

The decision has generated debate among football observers, given Madugu’s outstanding achievements over the past year.
Madugu’s credentials were further strengthened by his nomination for the Women’s Coach of the Year at the Ballon d’Or, where he emerged as the only African coach on the list, placing him among the global elite in women’s football.
In other awards announced by CAF, Moroccan forward Sanaa Mssoudy was named Women’s Interclub Player of the Year, while AS FAR claimed the Women’s Club of the Year honour.
Despite the disappointment on the awards stage, Madugu and the Super Falcons are expected to quickly turn their attention back to competitive action.
Nigeria are targeting qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and will also aim for an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title as they continue their dominance in African women’s football.
