Imadu Vows to End Impunity in Boxers’ Selection as NBF Plans Open Trials for Commonwealth Games

Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Hon. Omonlei Imadu, has vowed to end impunity in the selection of boxers for major international competitions as the federation announced plans to conduct open trials ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In a statement issued by the NBF Communications Department, the federation disclosed that the trials will be open to pugilists across all weight categories.

The date and venue for the screening exercise will be communicated once all logistical arrangements have been finalised.

Imadu assured stakeholders that the selection process would be transparent, credible, and fair, stressing that all boxers would be given equal opportunity to earn a place on the final shortlist.

“I make bold to say that the days of impunity in boxers’ selection for any international event are over,” Imadu said. “We have put mechanisms in place to ensure every athlete gets a fair and equal opportunity to make the final shortlist.

The current NBF board is committed to changing the trajectory of boxing in Nigeria, and this is another opportunity to uphold the highest standards of credibility.”

He further urged boxers to intensify their preparations and remain on high alert ahead of the trials, noting that only athletes who demonstrate the right skills, discipline, and competitive mentality would be selected.

“Our aim is to select boxers who are truly ready—those with the skills and mindset capable of bringing glory to the nation,” he added. “I urge coaches to ensure that pugilists under their tutelage are in peak condition ahead of the screening process.”

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
