Sports247 reports that Mozambique have already made history with their first win in any AFCON appearance and in reaching the round of 16 for the first time ever, but they now want to go a step further.

The next target is to cause a major upset by defeating Nigeria in the first knock out round of AFCON 2025, and The Mambas’ coach, Chiquinho Conde believes his team is capable of enacting their biggest football milestone.

“We waited for 16 games to win one match. We are all still happy, congratulating each other and enjoying the moment.

“I am happy but, as a coach, we need to stop a little bit of the celebrations and think about this game,” Conde stated.

One of his defenders, Reinildo Mandava sounded more defiant, as he declared: “We will play against a tough team but we believe in our work and we believe in what we can achieve.

“We know it is not an easy game and to win, we need to work for every minute of the game. The spirit now with the players is high and we want to use that as motivation for this game.”

Sports247 gathered that the winner between Nigerian and Mozambique will face either Algeria or DR Congo, with South Africa and Morocco also looming along the line, which means the Super Eagles face a tough route to the final.

An update by cafonline also noted, “Nigeria, among the most impressive sides in the group stages, will play Mozambique at Complexe Sportif de Fès, as they seek to go one better than their silver medal finish at the 2023 edition.

“Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo meet on Tuesday at Stade Prince Heritier Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, before the round concludes in a meeting between defending champions Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso at Grand Stade de Marrakech.”
