For Tochukwu Nnadi, the journey to the Super Eagles did not come with advance notice, media speculation, or quiet assurances behind the scenes. It arrived suddenly—through a message on social media—and in that instant, everything changed.

Speaking about his unexpected inclusion in Nigeria’s AFCON squad, the young midfielder admitted the moment nearly overwhelmed him with emotion.
“I was on call with my dad, and a friend sent me a message on Instagram to congratulate me,” Nnadi recalled.
“Then I went to Instagram to check the Nigeria Super Eagles page and I saw my name there.”
For a player who describes himself as reserved and not overly expressive, the weight of the moment was impossible to suppress.
“I’m not someone who usually shows a lot of emotion, but at that moment, I really wanted to cry.”
A Dream Realised on the AFCON Stage
Nnadi’s dream quickly turned into reality on the pitch during Nigeria’s final Group C fixture against Uganda. The Super Eagles secured a convincing 3–1 victory, with Paul Onuachu opening the scoring and Raphael Onyedika delivering a commanding performance, netting a brace.
In the 78th minute, head coach Eric Chelle made a tactical change, withdrawing Onuachu and handing Nnadi his long-awaited AFCON debut.
Though brief, the appearance marked a defining moment in the young midfielder’s career—his first steps onto Africa’s biggest football stage wearing the green and white.
What stands out most about Nnadi’s story is not just the surprise of his selection, but the responsibility he now carries. AFCON debuts are rarely handed out lightly, and for Nnadi, the call-up is both a reward and a challenge.
His inclusion reflects the Super Eagles’ growing willingness to trust emerging talents, while also highlighting the depth within Nigeria’s squad. For Nnadi, it is a reminder that hard work done quietly—away from headlines—can still be noticed.
A Moment That Changes Everything
AFCON tournaments are often remembered for goals, controversies, and silverware. But they are also shaped by moments like Nnadi’s—personal milestones that redefine careers and lives.
From discovering his name on Instagram to stepping onto the AFCON pitch just days later, Tochukwu Nnadi’s experience captures the raw emotion of representing Nigeria at the highest level.
And as he continues his journey with the Super Eagles, that moment—the one where he “really wanted to cry”—may well be the beginning of something far bigger.
