Majekodunmi: Super Eagles Show Championship Mentality in Sealing AFCON Knockout Spot

Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, Executive Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chairman of the NFF Youth Football Committee and FA Chairman of the Ogun State Football Association, has lauded the Super Eagles for displaying true championship mentality after working their way into the knockout stages of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Reacting to Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Tunisia in Fès, Majekodunmi said the result was a reflection of resilience, belief and tactical discipline, qualities he described as hallmarks of teams destined for success at major tournaments.

“This team showed championship mentality,” Majekodunmi said. “They worked their space into the knockout stages through hard work, unity and confidence. Even when the pressure came late in the game, they stayed composed and saw the match through.”

Nigeria dominated proceedings for most of the encounter, racing into a 3–0 lead with goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Ademola Lookman. Although Tunisia pulled two goals back in the closing minutes to set up a tense finish, the Super Eagles held firm to secure maximum points and confirm early qualification to the Round of 16.

Majekodunmi praised the attacking cohesion and tactical awareness displayed by the team, noting that the performance underlined the benefits of continuity and trust in players.

“The understanding between the players was clear for all to see,” he said. “From the intensity in attack to the discipline in defence, the team showed maturity and hunger. These are signs of a squad that knows what it wants from this competition.”

He also singled out the mental strength shown by the players after Tunisia’s late resurgence, describing it as a defining moment in their AFCON campaign.

“Big teams are tested in moments like that,” Majekodunmi added. “Conceding late goals can shake any side, but the Super Eagles responded with focus and courage. That is what separates contenders from pretenders.”

Speaking from his perspective as a football administrator deeply involved in youth and grassroots development, Majekodunmi said the team’s qualification sends a powerful message to young Nigerians.

“When young players see the national team play with confidence and determination, it inspires them to dream bigger,” he said.

“This qualification proves that preparation, discipline and teamwork can take you to the highest level.”

With Nigeria now through to the knockout stages and sitting atop their group, Majekodunmi urged the players to remain focused as the tournament progresses.

“Qualifying is an important step, but the journey is far from over,” he said. “If the team maintains this mindset and unity, they can achieve something special.”

He concluded by congratulating the players, technical crew and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, calling for continued support as the Super Eagles push deeper into the Africa Cup of Nations.
