Anambra State is set for a festive football spectacle as the Onwa Dezemba Football Match takes centre stage on Monday, December 29, 2025, at the Awka City Stadium, bringing together football heritage, community celebration, and Christmas cheer.
The highly anticipated match will feature an Anambra Selected team made up of former Rangers International FC stars taking on the Anambra State All Stars, in what promises to be an exciting clash of experience, pride, and nostalgia. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.

The event is powered by the Onwa Dezemba programme, a cultural and social initiative designed to unite Ndi Anambra during the festive season through sports, entertainment, and shared identity.
Adding prestige to the occasion, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, will attend as Special Guest, underlining the state government’s continued support for sports development and community engagement.
Speaking ahead of the match, Chikelue Iloenyosi, Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association and head of the planning committee, said the event goes beyond football.
“The Onwa Dezemba Football Match is about bringing our people together, celebrating our football heritage, and using the game to promote unity and hope,” Iloenyosi said.
“We want to reconnect our legends with the fans and inspire the younger generation to believe in the power of sports.”
A former Super Eagles defender himself, Iloenyosi has been instrumental in revitalising grassroots football in the state and creating platforms that reconnect past stars with the present.
Football fans can expect more than just a game.
The match is designed as a celebration of Anambra’s rich football history, particularly the legacy of Rangers International FC, while also showcasing the enduring passion for the sport across the state.
