AFCON 2025: Roche Makes History for Benin as Nigeria Reach Last 16; Senegal, DR Congo Settle for Draw as Matchday 2 in Group C, D Concludes

Matchday 2 in group C and D of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 was concluded on Sunday night as Nigeria sealed qualification for the Round of 16, Benin celebrated a historic AFCON victory, and the heavyweight clash between Senegal and DR Congo ended in a draw.

Nigeria 3–2 Tunisia (Group C)

Nigeria booked their place in the knockout stage after a pulsating 3–2 victory over Tunisia in Fès, making it two wins from two in Group C.

Ademola Lookman was the standout performer, influencing all three goals in a commanding Super Eagles display.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring before the break, rising highest to head home Lookman’s inviting cross.

The pressure continued after halftime as Wilfred Ndidi doubled Nigeria’s advantage from a set piece, before Lookman finished off a rapid counter-attack to put daylight between the sides at 3–0.

Tunisia mounted a late comeback, with Montassar Talbi heading home before Ali Abdi converted from the spot following a VAR review. Despite the late scare,

Nigeria held firm to secure maximum points.
The result sends the Super Eagles through to the Round of 16 with six points, while Tunisia remain on three points ahead of a decisive final group match.

Uganda 1–1 Tanzania (Group C)

Earlier in Rabat, Uganda and Tanzania played out a fiercely contested East African derby that ended in a 1–1 draw.

Simon Msuva converted a second-half penalty to give Tanzania the lead, but substitute Karl Ikpeazu restored parity for Uganda with a well-taken header.

The Cranes had a golden opportunity to win it in stoppage time, but Allan Okello fired his penalty over the bar.

Both teams sit on one point, leaving qualification hopes hanging on their final group fixtures.

Senegal 1–1 DR Congo (Group D)

In Tangier, reigning contenders Senegal were held to a hard-fought draw by DR Congo in a match that lived up to its billing.
Cedric Bakambu struck first for DR Congo just after the hour, reacting quickest to a rebound after Edouard Mendy’s save.

Senegal responded swiftly, with Sadio Mané finishing from close range eight minutes later to restore parity.
Both sides now sit level on four points at the top of Group D, setting up a thrilling final round of matches.

Benin 1–0 Botswana (Group D)

Benin wrote a new chapter in their football history in Rabat as Yohan Roche’s first-half goal secured the nation’s first-ever AFCON victory.
Roche struck in the 28th minute, his effort taking a deflection after a move involving captain Steve Mounié.

Botswana came close to an equaliser when Mothusi Johnson hit the woodwork, but Benin’s disciplined defence saw them over the line.

The win lifts Benin to three points and keeps their qualification hopes alive, while Botswana’s campaign suffered a major setback after a second straight defeat.

AFCON on Day 8

Attention now shifts to Day 8 on Sunday, 28 December, with several crucial encounters in group D and F will wrap up Matchday two in the groups to further shape the knockout race.
