Sports Consultant, Administrator and Director of STM Sports, Bagbe Micheal fondly called (Coach Mickey) has dismissed claims that South Africa’s 1–0 defeat to Egypt was the result of poor tactical decisions by head coach Hugo Broos.

“This is absolutely untrue,” Coach Mickey stated.
According to him, South Africa applied intense pressure immediately after the restart.
“South Africa pressed the Pharaohs relentlessly from the blast of the second-half whistle until the final minute. However, the Egyptians were extremely disciplined and well-coordinated in defence.”
Coach Mickey pointed to physical and technical factors—rather than coaching errors—as key reasons for the result.
“Unfortunately, South Africa lacked the height to battle Egypt effectively in aerial duels and were also poor in shooting precision. Credit must also go to the Pharaohs’ goalkeeper.”
He added that Egypt’s motivation went beyond securing three points.
“Egypt didn’t just want to win; they wanted to break a 19-year jinx of not defeating South Africa. That hunger showed in their approach and defensive commitment.”
Coach Mickey concluded by criticizing reactionary analysis.
“Football is not about running mouths and unfounded criticism. Sometimes the game is just the game.”
His comments reinforce the view that Egypt’s victory was earned through discipline, resilience, and collective effort—not tactical failure from the South African bench
