Both nations opened their campaigns with statement victories —
Nigeria edging Tanzania 2–1 and Tunisia easing past Uganda 3–1 — setting the stage for a heavyweight encounter between two teams steeped in AFCON tradition.

Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT), and with history, pride and qualification all on the line, the stakes could hardly be higher.

A Rivalry Steeped in History

Nigeria and Tunisia first crossed paths competitively in 1961 during qualification for the 1962 Africa Cup of Nations, a dramatic two-legged tie that set the tone for decades of fiercely contested battles.

Nigeria won 2–1 at home, but controversy followed in the return leg in Tunis, where Nigeria walked off with the score at 2–2. Tunisia were awarded a 2–0 win and advanced on aggregate.

Since then, the Eagles have collided across AFCON finals and FIFA World Cup qualifiers, often with fine margins and high drama defining the outcome.

The pair have met in qualification for four World Cups — 1978, 1982, 1986 and 2010 — with fortunes swinging both ways.

Tunisia denied Nigeria a place at Argentina 1978, while the Super Eagles edged a penalty shoot-out duel in the 1982 qualifiers.

In 1986, Tunisia again had the final say over two legs, and in 2010 Nigeria finished top of their qualifying group ahead of Tunisia to book a ticket to South Africa.
AFCON Battles:

Moments That Shaped the Rivalry

At the Africa Cup of Nations finals, Nigeria and Tunisia have faced each other six times, producing unforgettable moments.

Their first AFCON meeting came in 1978 in the third-place play-off, a match awarded 2–0 to Nigeria after Tunisia walked off with the score level. Nigeria triumphed again in the group stage of the 2000 tournament, winning 4–2 in Lagos.
Tunisia, however, had their revenge as hosts in 2004, eliminating Nigeria in the semi-finals after a 1–1 draw that ended 5–3 on penalties.

Two years later, Nigeria returned the favour in the 2006 quarter-finals, winning a dramatic shoot-out after another 1–1 draw.

More recently, Nigeria claimed third place at the 2019 AFCON with a 1–0 victory, before Tunisia stunned the Super Eagles in the Round of 16 at the 2021 edition, courtesy of a Youssef Msakni strike.
Across AFCON meetings, Nigeria hold the edge — three wins to Tunisia’s one — underlining how finely balanced this rivalry has always been.

Nigeria: Form, Flow and Firepower

Nigeria arrive in Fez buoyed by their opening-day success against Tanzania, a result that extended their impressive consistency at AFCON.

The Super Eagles are unbeaten in their last seven group-stage matches at the finals and have lost just once in their last 15 at this stage.

Goals have rarely been an issue. Nigeria have scored in 13 of their last 14 AFCON matches, with Ademola Lookman once again delivering on the big stage.

His winning strike against Tanzania was his fourth at the tournament, while Alex Iwobi’s two assists — his first ever at AFCON — highlighted Nigeria’s growing creativity from midfield.

Victor Osimhen led the line with relentless intent, attempting seven shots in the opener, the most by a Nigerian in an AFCON match since 2010.

With sharp ball circulation and control — completing 451 of 501 passes — Nigeria showed they can dominate possession as well as strike decisively.

Tunisia: Confidence, Control and Milestones

Tunisia’s opening win over Uganda was equally significant. It ended a four-match winless run at AFCON and marked a historic moment as Ellyes Skhiri scored Tunisia’s 100th goal at AFCON finals, making them the sixth nation to reach that landmark.

The victory was Tunisia’s first opening-match win at AFCON since 2013 and reinforced their strong record in second group games, where they are unbeaten in their last five appearances.

Creatively, Hannibal Mejbri stood out with four chances created, while Montassar Talbi anchored the defence and dictated play from the back with the highest number of completed passes in the match.

What’s at Stake in Fez

With both teams sitting on three points, another victory on Saturday night would seal qualification to the knockout stage and potentially shape the route ahead in Morocco.

Beyond the mathematics, however, lies pride and history.
Nigeria vs Tunisia is a fixture that rarely delivers comfort or certainty. Penalty shoot-outs, walk-offs, shock results and defining goals have all been part of this rivalry’s rich tapestry.

As the Super Eagles and Carthage Eagles prepare to face off once more, form and statistics point to another tight contest. History, meanwhile, suggests drama is inevitable when these two Eagles collide.
