Former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni has defended Victor Osimhen following Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting the striker was simply unlucky not to get on the scoresheet.
Reacting to the Group C encounter in Fès, Morocco, Yakubu said Osimhen’s contribution went beyond goals and should not be judged solely by his failure to score.

“Osimhen worked very hard in that game. It just wasn’t his day in front of goal,” Yakubu said.
The former Super Eagles striker pointed to moments in the match where Osimhen came close, including a first-half effort cleared off the line and a second-half finish ruled out for offside.
“On another day, he scores one or two goals. These things happen in football,” he added.
Yakubu praised Osimhen’s movement, pressing and overall presence, noting that his performance still played a key role in Nigeria’s attacking play.
“He kept the defenders busy and created space for others. That’s important,” he explained.
While commending Osimhen, Yakubu suggested that Nigeria’s midfield could still improve as the tournament progresses, despite standout performances from some players.
“I thought Alex Iwobi did very well, and Samuel Chukwueze also had good moments,” he said.
However, Yakubu believes the team can achieve better balance and sharper transitions from midfield to attack.
“There is still room for improvement in midfield. The team can be more compact and creative,” he noted.
Despite these observations, Yakubu described Nigeria’s opening win as a positive foundation for the rest of the tournament.
“Winning the first game is always important. It settles the nerves,” he said.
Looking ahead, Yakubu urged patience with the team and its key players, especially Osimhen.
“He will score. It’s only a matter of time,” he concluded.
Nigeria’s victory leaves them well placed in Group C, with attention now turning to their next fixture against Tunisia national football team, where Osimhen will once again be central to Nigeria’s attacking hopes in Morocco.
