This is according to South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, as the Belgian tactician is thinking only about Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon and Ghana as likely champions next month.
While admitting that his own team, Bafana Bafana, also do not look good enough to lift the trophy in January 2026, Broos reckoned that the hosts look likeliest of all to win it.
He theorized that Morocco have the brightest chance of winning their second ever AFCON title, since claiming it as hosts in 1976, mostly because they are playing at home and due to their recent form.
Broos reasoned; “I think, if you can call a favourite, it’s Morocco; because they are a very good team and playing at home.
“For all the rest, it will be a challenge. I think of Egypt, I think of Cameroon, I think of Ghana, Morocco and so on.
“The only thing I can say is that this AFCON will be tougher than the one in the Ivory Coast. We will see after the group stages which teams are still there.
“Then maybe we can change our opinion. But now, for the moment, you will not hear me saying that South Africa is one of the favourites.”
