“One Step at a Time!’ Ekpo Urges Calm Approach as Super Eagles Plot AFCON Path

Former Super Eagles midfielder Friday Ekpo has cautioned against rushing expectations at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, urging Nigeria to adopt a step-by-step approach if they are to succeed at the tournament.

Speaking ahead of AFCON, Ekpo stressed that progress in major competitions comes through clear, gradual targets rather than lofty predictions made too early.

“The first focus should be getting out of the group. That’s always the foundation,” Ekpo said.

The former international explained that once Nigeria secure progression from the group stage, attention can then shift to navigating the knockout rounds.

“After the group stage, you think about the round of 16, then the quarterfinals, then the semi-finals. You don’t jump steps,” he added.

Ekpo warned that placing pressure on the team by talking about winning the tournament from the start could be counterproductive.

“When expectations are rushed, players feel unnecessary pressure. Football doesn’t work like that,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of allowing the head coach freedom to make decisions without interference.

“The coach should be allowed to select his players and focus on his objectives. Stability is very important,” Ekpo noted.

According to Ekpo, AFCON tournaments are often decided by discipline, focus and adaptability rather than reputation.

“AFCON is unpredictable. Teams that stay focused and take it game by game usually go far,” he said.

The former midfielder added that Nigeria’s recent setbacks should encourage patience rather than panic.

“After what happened in the World Cup qualifiers, this is not the time to rush things. It’s time to rebuild confidence properly,” he stated.

Ekpo believes Nigeria still has the quality to compete, but insists success will depend on how well the team manages pressure and expectations.

“The quality is there, but it must be handled correctly. That’s why taking it step by step matters,” he explained.

He concluded by urging Nigerians to support the team without placing unrealistic demands on the players.

“Support them, encourage them, and let them grow into the tournament,” Ekpo said.

As AFCON approaches, Ekpo’s advice highlights a measured path forward — one built on patience, clarity and steady progress rather than rushed ambition.
