Rivers United were forced to dig deep after conceding early to a Nenrot Silas strike, but the response from Finidi’s men was swift and determined.
Goalkeeper Ani Ozomena kept the Pride of Rivers in the contest with a stunning first-half save that denied Plateau United a second goal and gave his side a platform to regroup.
The equaliser came through Boluwaji Sholumade, returning from suspension and announcing himself immediately with a composed finish to drag Rivers United level.
The momentum shifted in the second half as Rivers United pushed higher, pressed with greater intent, and forced Plateau United into uncomfortable long balls.
Just when the match seemed destined to end in a draw, Rivers United struck late.
A dangerous counterattack led to a precise cross from Okon Aniekeme, which a Plateau United defender mis-kicked into his own net — sealing a dramatic and deserved away victory.
The win moves Rivers United joint-top of the NPFL table alongside Nasarawa United, still with a game in hand.
Rivers United have amassed a total 11 away points — the highest in the NPFL this season and have remain
unbeaten on the road — in seven matches pulling two victories and five drawn games.
Rivers United continue to grow into one of the league’s most organised and consistent sides under Finidi’s leadership after extending their unbeaten to eight games.
A pleased Finidi applauded the team’s improvement after halftime:
“It’s an important win. In the first half we allowed too many throw-ins and free kicks, and that kept them in the game. We struggled a bit, but in the second half we pressed higher, won the second balls, and controlled the field better.”
On the team’s recent form, he added: “We’re happy. We could have taken all three points against Abia Warriors last Sunday, but it didn’t happen. From two tough games, we’ve collected four points — that’s good for us. We are satisfied with the progress.”
Rivers United return home to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, where they will host Wikki Tourist on Monday in a Matchday 17 encounter.
