NFF Bows to Pressure, Assures Super Falcons of International Friendly in February Window

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the Super Falcons will feature in at least one international friendly match during the February 2026 FIFA window, following mounting concerns over the team’s lack of competitive action.

The nine-time African champions missed recent international windows, a lapse that contributed to their slight drop in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking—from 36th to 37th.

The inactivity also drew criticism from several players, who voiced their frustrations on social media as Nigeria ramps up preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Women’s football analysts have echoed similar sentiments, stressing that regular high-level competition is essential for the Super Falcons as they aim to defend their continental crown and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Responding to the growing pressure, the NFF Executive Committee addressed the issue during its meeting held on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, at the Federation’s Secretariat in Abuja.

In the communiqué issued after the meeting, the Federation stated:

“The Executive Committee equally mandated the NFF Secretariat to commit efforts, energy and critical thinking to securing quality friendly matches for the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, in the February 2026 FIFA window, as the 10-time African champions gun for an 11th title and a 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup ticket, at the 14th Women Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Morocco, 17th March – 3rd April 2026.”

The NFF is expected to announce the opponent(s) and venue(s) for the February friendly match(es) in the coming weeks.

The Super Falcons will head to Morocco next year seeking an 11th continental title and looking to successfully defend the WAFCON crown they reclaimed in 2024.

The tournament, scheduled for 17 March to 3 April 2026, will also serve as the African qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
