Dikko Sets AFCON Mandate: ‘Semi-Final Minimum — The Bar Is Higher Now for the Super Eagles’

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has delivered a firm and unmistakable message ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco: the Super Eagles must reach at least the semi-finals.

With AFCON kicking off on 21 December 2025, Dikko said Nigeria’s second-place finish at the previous tournament means expectations have risen, and neither the players nor the technical crew can afford to fall below that standard.

“We were runners-up last time. The bar has been raised. The team must at least match that achievement, if not surpass it,” he said.

Dikko stressed that head coach Eric Chelle has been given full support and must now deliver a strong, coordinated performance in Morocco.

“Chelle knows the target. Nigerians expect progress, not excuses. A semi-final is the minimum expectation,” he emphasized.

He explained that reaching the last four is not just about meeting public expectations but also about showing that Nigeria’s football is stabilizing after the setback of missing the 2026 World Cup.

“AFCON is now an opportunity to restore confidence. The nation needs a deep run — the players, the federation, and the fans deserve that,” he added.

Dikko also noted that the team has gained valuable experience from recent tournaments, which should translate to maturity and improved game management.

“Most of the squad has played at AFCON before. They’ve been in the final. They know what is required,” he said.

He called for unity among stakeholders, saying preparation must be collective and distractions eliminated.

“The players, coaches, and administrators must all work as one. Nigeria succeeds only when everyone is pulling in the same direction,” he said.

Dikko concluded by urging Nigerians to rally behind the team, while reminding the players that they are carrying the weight of national hope.

“The mandate is clear. Go to Morocco, compete strongly, and bring pride to the nation. The Super Eagles must show they are still among Africa’s elite.”
