Eyoto Sports Academy Finals Light Up Benin as Rugby Takes Centre Stage Today

The 6th edition of the Eyoto Sports Academy Championship delivered a thrilling climax on Friday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where young athletes were celebrated in grand fashion.

The event was attended by top Edo State sports administrators, including the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Director of Sports Development Madam Sabina Chikwere, and Permanent Secretary Mrs. Efe Ameze, among other dignitaries.

Winners across various athletics events walked away with giant trophies, medals, spike shoes, cash prizes, scholarships, and more—reflecting the Academy’s commitment to nurturing talent at the grassroots.

The Athletics segment followed a Cycling demonstration held earlier on Friday, December 5, 2025, which signaled the Academy’s expanded vision for multi-sport engagement.

Rugby Takes Over Today

Attention now shifts to today’s highly anticipated 1st edition of the Eyoto Rugby Championships, scheduled from 12 noon to 5 pm at the iconic Edo Boys High School, Adolor—the traditional home of rugby in Edo State.

Eight schools (4 boys’ teams and 4 girls’ teams) selected from the 16 schools recently approved under the Edo State Rugby Development Programme will compete for honours.

BOYS CATEGORY

1. Ogbe Secondary School

2. Edo Boys High School, Adolor

3. Uselu Secondary School

4. Technical College

Aside from the schools’ competition, Edo State senior rugby players will feature in eye-catching 7s and 10s demonstration matches with the EYOTO Team.

Fans will also witness Kicking and Passing Challenges, as well as a Games Masters and Kids Seminar & Clinic beginning at 10 AM.

In a special highlight, Edo’s recently returned National Team Players, fresh from the World Rugby League Series in Canada and the Heritage Tournament in Ghana, will be honoured.

EYOTO Sports Academy: Shaping the Future of Edo Youth

President Chief Dr. Felix Idahosa reaffirmed EYOTO’s mission to raise world-class athletes and announced the full integration of rugby into future championships.

“Our greatest joy is seeing young people compete with all their hearts and strengths,” Idahosa said.

Vice President Dr. Festus Idahosa Erese described the addition of rugby as a strategic expansion, while Treasurer Friday Enoye, a noted sports philanthropist, promised that the 2025 and 2026 editions will surpass expectations.

The Academy has awarded scholarships to 10 exceptional young athletes, further solidifying its commitment to education and talent development.

Edo Rugby Association Praised

Head Coach of the Edo State Rugby Association, Obong Ntiense Williams (“Mr. Rugby”), expressed gratitude for EYOTO’s continuous partnership, pledging to sustain rugby’s relevance in the physical and mental development of Edo State students.
