Troost-Ekong Bows Out: ‘Bittersweet, but the Right Time, The New Eagles Must Write Their Own Story’

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has described his decision to retire from international football as “bittersweet but the right decision”, bringing an emotional close to a distinguished national career that spanned nearly a decade.

Ekong, who led Nigeria with pride, resilience, and consistency, said the timing felt natural, especially with what he called a “gradual passing of the baton” inside the Super Eagles camp.

“It’s bittersweet, but it’s the right time. There has been a gradual passing of the baton, and the next generation must write their own stories,” he said.

The 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament finalist revealed that one of his biggest regrets as he exits the scene is missing the 2026 World Cup ticket, a dream he fought hard to achieve.

“Not qualifying for the World Cup hurts deeply. It was one of my biggest targets. I really wanted to lead Nigeria there,” he admitted.

Ekong emphasized that his decision is not a goodbye to Nigerian football but a step back to allow younger leaders to rise and take responsibility in the national team.

“I’m stepping aside so the next leaders can emerge. The team needs new voices, new energy, new leadership,” he added.

He expressed deep appreciation for the fans, teammates, coaches, and everyone who supported him throughout his journey, noting that representing Nigeria was one of the greatest honours of his life.

“Wearing the Nigerian jersey was a blessing. I gave everything, every single time,” he said.

Ekong said he will continue supporting the Super Eagles from the sidelines, especially as the team prepares for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where he hopes they can achieve what he could not before retiring.

“I believe in this team. They have what it takes to succeed in Morocco. I’ll always support them,” he stated.

He ended with a heartfelt message that reflects both closure and hope:

“It’s time for a new chapter, for me, and for the Super Eagles. I’m proud of what we built, and excited for what comes next.”
